а) Джейн - першокурсниця. Вона старанна студентка й працює постійно. Вона захоплюється навчанням і тому їй дуже легко вчитись. В минулому місяці вона захворіла й тому пропустила багато занять. І як результат - вона відстала від своєї групи, але її одногрупники допомогли їй догнати групу. І хоч вона не найкраща студентка в групі, вона подає надії. Її найкраща сторона - фонетика. У неї дуже добре виходить імітувати (вона добре імітує). Після закінчення університету вона збирається спеціалізуватись у фонетиці.
b) - Привіт, Микола, чому ти виглядаєш таким нещасним?
- Я прокинувся перед світанком. Це така напруга.
- Чому так рано?
- А хіба ти не знаєш? Я їжджу з передмістя до Києва кожен день.
- Не сумуй. Я сподіваюсь, ти звикнеш до цього.
- Буду сподіватись.
с) - Ти вже вирішив ким ти станеш?
- Звичайно. Я дуже хочу (бажаю) стати викладачем англійської мови і я подам документи в КНЛУ.
- А чи знаєш ти, що минулого року був високий конкурс?
- Так, знаю. Минулого року мій найкращий товариш не поступив, але й це не примусить мене здатися.
- Нехай тобі щастить.

d) - Катю, що ти думаєш про екзамени?
- Мені здається, що вони були зовсім нескладні. Я склала їх відмінно все на "5". А ти?
- Що стосується мене, я одержав "4" з історії. Мої відповіді сподобались екзаменатору, але я був занадто схвильований і не міг довго зібратись з думками. Але, здається, моя відповідь була зв'язною.
- Немає причин журитись. Ти ж не провалився, чи не так? Нехай тобі пощастить наступного разу.
e) Особливо важко пристосуватись до студентського життя немісцевим студентам, тобто тим, хто мешкає у гуртожитку. Їм доводиться самостійно розпоряджатись своїм часом та грошима. Перший рік для них дуже важливий.
f) Відвідування лекцій та семінарів в університеті обов'язкове. Прогульники дуже швидко відстають від групи і їм потім дуже важко наздогнати своїх одногрупників. До того ж вони ризикують мати неприємну розмову з деканом.
g) На кожному занятті викладач перевіряє присутність студентів і відмічає відсутніх у журналі. Староста групи є відповідальним за ведення журналу групи і носить його на кожне заняття.

Money is a big problem for any university student. By the end of the first year every student will have spent too much money.

In my first year work seemed like a burden, probably because I always left it until the last minute. I sometimes wish I worked harder in my first year at Oxford. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had. But then again, I did meet an awful lot of people.

My advice to school leavers about to start their first year at university? You shouldn't be lured by people who seem to be going out all the time not doing any work. People do work, even if they don't seem to. You can get into the partying mode very easily when you first get here. The first weeks are a party, having fun and meeting people. But you do need to be responsible about your studies as well as having fun.

First-year students have to make a break from home, from a set of school friends they've probably been with for the last eight years. So it's always a bit stressful coming to a strange university. But on the whole I think most of them settle down and make friends. The main problem is money. There is no way that the grant can possibly cover your expenses. It's very difficult to persuade your parents to give you an extra $25 a week, so many students have jobs. I think it's particularly stressful combining work and study for architecture students because they have to produce projects to a deadline every two weeks. My advice to school leavers about to start university? Make sure you've got some savings and that you've got a very friendly bank manager!
