Assessment

As children enjoy their learning experience in My little island, it’s important to assess their progress to support their motivation. We offer to introduce the stickers system. Every child gets a cupboard picture of Sammy the Squirrel. The teacher has a set of reward stickers. They should be small enough to fit in the squirrel. So, the idea is as follows - whenever children have any group or individual competitions and win they get a sticker. You can give a sticker as a praise for an exceptional effort of the child. The stickers are a great tool of motivation. By the end of the course, the children’s squirrels will be full of colourful stickers.

Portfolios are also an excellent way of keeping track of children’s progress. Portfolios are to include the children’s works collected throughout the year. Children can decorate and take pride in their own portfolios. Children’s portfolios can also be shown to parents and family during meetings to highlight their progress.

Informal assessment is on-going. Watching and listening to children as they do their work and learn English, recording progress and problems, checking comprehension, and having informal conversations to keep track of how a child is doing, are all important. Encouraging children to check one another’s work also helps this process.
