Порядковые числительные обозначают порядок предметов при счете и отвечают на вопрос Which? Который?
E.g. Read the second sentence.

Употребляются порядковые числительные с определенным артиклем the. Неопределенный артикль может предшествовать порядковому числительному, которое имеет значение “еще один”.
E.g. You are like a second family to me.
A third possibility occurred to me.
Порядковые числительные до 20 образуются от количественных числительных путем добавления к ним суффикса - th.
four – the fourth
six – the sixth
seven – the seventh
ten – the tenth
eleven – the eleventh
thirteen – the thirteenth
fourteen – the fourteenth
fifteen – the fifteenth
sixteen – the sixteenth
seventeen – the seventeenth
eighteen – the eighteenth

Исключения:
the first - первый
the second - второй
the third - третий
При образовании порядковых числительных пятый, восьмой, девятый и двенадцатый от соответствующих количественных числительных первого десятка их основы изменяются:
five – the fifth
eight – the eighth
nine – the ninth
twelve – the twelfth
При образовании порядковых числительных от количественных числительных, обозначающих десятки и имеющих окончание -y, происходит изменение конечной буквы на -i- и к этой основе прибавляется суффикс -eth.

При образовании порядковых числительных от сложных количественных числительных изменению подвергается только последний компонент.
