The results of multidisciplinary research including data of psychology, physiology and psychiatry are presented. It was shown that in different forms of mental pathology the most vulnerable spots are complex forms of associative and semantic memory. Active adaptation allows patients to compensate lack of associative memory with spontaneous memory (epileptic patients on the remission stage). People who refuse active adaptation not only couldn't compensate lack of some kinds of memory with another but also decrease subjectively remained memory abilities (patients - liquidators of Chernobyl accident and patients suffered from cardialgia).

Key words: voluntary, involuntary, associative and semantic memory, norm, pathology, conpensation, adaptation, memory activity, multidisciplinary research.
