Introduction – Does Art need Philosophy – Why does Philosophy need Art ?

Öåëü: to introduce students to the theme of the course – what is the nature of the relations between philosophy and art?

Ñîäåðæàíèå: many prominent post-second world war philosophers in France and Russia, such as Derrida, Lyotard, Ryklin have turned to the analysis of art as a way of expressing their ideas. They have even championed the visual arts as a richer source of existential knowledge than that available through language. This course seeks to ask why they should do this? It also seeks to question whether using art as an object of philosophy does not constitute a violation of the very principle of a work of art. Michel Foucault’s analysis of the painting, Meninas, by Velasquez as an example of the type of questions the course seeks to explore.
