Exercise 8.Write sentences using the words in brackets. Use mustn’t or don’t have to.

Exercise 9. Write what you would do in these situations. Use one of the phrases below.

1. Your colleague in on her way to see the Sales manager. You know she wants to read a report that you have just finished. What do you say to her?

2. Your boss, who is abroad on business, is on the phone. She urgently wants to see an article about your company that appeared in today’s paper. What do you say to her?

3. The Marketing manager is late for a meeting. Perhaps he has forgotten about it and needs reminding. What do you say to the other people at the meeting?

4. An important visitor needs to be shown around the factory this afternoon. You are too busy but you know that your deputy is free. What do you say to him?

5. You have written a highly confident report. The director is on the phone and he wants to see it now. What do you say to him?

 

Exercise 10. Translate the sentences.

1. The steamer may arrive tomorrow morning. 2. Some mistakes must have been made in assembling the parts of the machine. 3. Such defects may easily lead to a serious breakdown of the machine. 4. The sellers stated that the goods ought to have been examined at the port of loading. 5. The expert pointed out that the goods must have been in a bad condition already at the time of dispatch. 6. The expert admits that the goods may have been damaged in transit. 7. The manufacturer informed the buyers that they could deliver the machines within four month. 8. Please inform us when you could deliver the goods. 9. The agent agents telegraphed to the shippers that the steamer might arrive in Odessa on May 24. 10. The goods were packed in strong boxes so that they might withstand oversea transport.

 

Exercise 11. Translate the sentences into English using the modal verbs.

1. Чи можете Ви перекласти цю угоду на французьку мову? 2. Коли він приїхав до Лондону, він міг вести переговори з фірмами без перекладача. 3. Ми могли би відправити ці машини наприкінці місяця, якби отримали від вас всі документи не пізніше майбутнього тижня. 4. Не може бути, щоб він забув про це. 5. Невже він відмовився допомогти вам? 6. Чому ви не прийшли до офісу вчора? Ви б могли поговорити з директором з цього питання. 7. Якби ви прийшли сьогодні ввечері, то можливо застали б директора. 8. Він говорив дуже голосно, щоб люди, які сиділи в кінці зали, чули його. 9. Напишіть їй зараз, щоб вона прийняла необхідні заходи.
