Вот правила, по которым он употребляется.

The нужен:

1. Когда этот предмет уже упоминался.

# I see a cat. The cat is black

2. Когда говорящим известно, о чем идет речь

# This is the cat I love very much.

3. Когда говорим о чем-то уникальном, единственном в своем роде – the sun, the moon

# This is the Queen of Cats!

4. Перед порядковыми числительными (the first, the second etc.)

# The first cat kisses the last cat.

5. Во многих устойчивых выражениях: in the middle, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, go to the cinema, the best

# The best cat goes to the cinema.

6. музыкальные инструменты

# The cat plays the piano.

The не нужен :

1. Перед названиями стран, именами

2. # Kitty is from Brazil.

3. Во многих выражениях:

by car by train

on foot on holiday at school

at work at university

go to bed play football/basketball have breakfast/lunch/dinner
