Генеральний штаб Збройних Сил України (ГШ ЗСУ) є вищим виконавчим військовим органом в системі керівництва Збройними Силами України. Основними функціями ГШ ЗСУ є:
− здійснення стратегічного планування бойового застосування ЗСУ;
− організація та проведення заходів щодо підтримання бойової та мобілізаційної готовності;
− керівництво бойовою, оперативною та морально-психологічною підготовкою військ;
− керівництво підготовкою військових кадрів для ЗСУ;
− визначення організаційно-штатної структури військових формувань, потреб в особовому складі, озброєнні, військовій техніці та матеріальних засобах;
− організація взаємодії та управління ЗСУ у мирний та воєнний час;
− планування, організація та проведення науково-дослідної роботи в ЗСУ;
− керівництво повсякденним життям та діяльністю військ.
