Insignia and accoutrements

Naval officers wear distinctively different rank devices depending upon the uniform they're wearing. The three basic uniforms and rank devices used are: khakis, collar insignia pins; whites, stripesonshoulder boards; and blues, stripessewn on thelower coat sleeves.
