The Government of Britain.

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. The monarchy is the most ancient secular institution in the United Kingdom. The Queen is the personification of the state. In law, she is the head of the executive, an integral part of legislature, the head of the judiciary, the commander in chief of all the Armed forces of the Crown.

In practice, as a result of a long evolutionary process, the country is governed by the elected government with a Prime Minister as the head.

However, the monarchy has a great deal more power than it is commonly supposed. One of the most important duties is the duty to appoint the Prime Minister.

The highest legislative authority in the United Kingdom is the Queen in Parliament, that is to say the Queen and the Houses of Parliament. There are two chambers in the Parliament – the House of Lords and the House of Commons. There are two parliamentary parties in Great Britain – the Conservative and the Labour one.
