Зворот “there is”, “there are”
There is a book, some pencil and a pen on the table.
There are some pencils, a book and a pen on the table.
There is a book on the desk.
There is a chair there.
There is a book on the table.
Іменник у множині часто вживається з неозначеними займенниками some, any, many, a lot, much, little і з кількісними числівниками:
There are some books on my table.
There are three Ukrainian books in my bag.
Дієслово to be у звороті there is може вживатися у різних часах:
There was a meeting at the club yesterday.
There will be a good concert at our club tomorrow.
У питальній формі дієслово to be ставиться попереду there:
Is there a library at your institute?
Will there be a meeting at the institute tomorrow?
Заперечна форма звороту there is утворюється за допомогою заперечної частки not, яка ставиться безпосередньо після дієслова to be.
There isn’t a book in my bag.
There aren’t any books in the desk.
There isn’t any milk in this jug.
There is no map in that room.
There is no ink in my pen.
Короткі відповіді на запитання зі зворотом there is складається із “yes” чи “no” і звороту there is у стверджувальній чи заперечній формі у відповідному часі.
Is there a book on the table?
Yes, there is. Так.
No, there is not / No, there isn’t.
Між реченнями «There is a book on the table» та “The book is on table” існує змістова різниця.
There is a book on the table. The book is on the table.
ARTICLE A/THE
§ 1. Артиклі – a, an, the – є основними визначниками імен іменників.
1. A і an носять назву невизначеного артикля (the Indefinite Article). The носить назву означеного артикля (the Definite Article).
an author автор, an arm рука.
Перед словами, що починаються з літери u, вживається артикль а, коли u читається як [ju:], оскільки перший звук в таких словах є згодним, і артикль an, коли і читається як [а]: a union союз, an umbrella парасолька.
2. Перед словами, що починаються з літери h, вживається артикль an, коли h не читається, оскільки перший звук в таких словах є гласним, і артикль а, коли h читається: an hour година, a hunter мисливець.
I wear a cap in summer and а hat in autumn.
When I write, I always use а pen.
We wear caps in summer and hats in autumn. When we write, we always use pens.
My brother is an engineer.
His sister has become a doctor.
This is a dictionary.
My friend, a teacher of history, has been awarded the Order of Lenin.
Mr. A., a student of our Institute, took the first place in the chess tournament.
They are engineers.
Mr. A. and Mr. В., students of our Institute, took the first place in the chess tournament.
These are the books you werelooking for.
Mr. Ivanov, the inventor of this machine, is an old friend of mine.
Pushkin, the great Russian poet, was born iu 1799.
A child can understand it.
A square has four sides.
Children can understand it. Squares have four sides.
He bought a book yesterday.
Show me a map of Europe.
When I entered the room, I saw a man standing at the window.
There is a telephone in the room.
He has sent me some magazines from Donetsk.
Has he sent you any magazines from Donetsk?
He hasn't sent me any magazines from Donetsk.
There are some pencils in the box.
Are there any pencils in the box?
There aren't any pencils in the box.
б) Крім some і any, для вираження невизначеної кількості можуть також вживатися займенники many багато, few мало, a few небагато, кілька:
He bought a few books yesterday.
Did you buy many books yesterday?
I shall come in an hour.
He did not say a word.
I have bought a pound of sugar.
The price of this commodity is five shillings a kilogram.
He has won a (one) thousand roubles.
The case weighs a (one) hundred pounds.
What a clever man!
What a fine building!
What beautiful pictures!
What luck!
What book did you buy yesterday?
She is such a clever woman!
She is quite a young girl.
It is rather a long story.
These are such interesting books!
Did you ever see such weather?
It is not so simple a problem as it seems.
It is too urgent a matter postpone. to
