I was about to make a telephone call, but suddenly I heard a doorbell.
They were about to visit the museum but suddenly they heard the announcement.
He was about to marry her but then he suddenly changed his mind.
Exercise 1. Translate the above speech patterns from English into Russian.
Exercise 2. Make up your own sentences using speech patterns.
Exercise 3. Translate the sentences into English using speech patterns.

Word Combinations and Phrases.

Exercise 5. Copy out from Text One the sentences containing the word combinations and phrases given above and translate them into Russian.

Friends.
Exercise 59.Tell about a friend using one of the adjectives from exercise 57. Explain why.
When I lost my job last year, my friend Lucia was really encouraging. She kept telling me I would get a better job soon, and I have!
Exercise 63. Discuss the following questions.
1 Do you ever have arguments with your friends?
2. Have you ever fallen out with a close friend? What happened?
3. What do friends / family usually argue about?

Revision of Tenses .
Exercise 64. Some office workers are talking at lunchtime. Complete the conversation choosing the right variant.
Exercise 65. Use a verb from the box in the present simple or the present continuous to complete the dialogue.
Exercise 68. We often ask what people were doing when something important happened. Open the brackets using the correct form of the verbs.
Exercise 69. Fiona is in charge of a big party but she arrives late, in the middle of the preparations. Complete the dialogue by putting the verbs into the present perfect simple or the present perfect continuous.
Exercise 71. Fill in the gaps with a correct verb in a correct form.

Comparison of adjectives.
1. Comparative and superlative forms

Note:
· Further and farther refer to distance:
London is five miles further/farther.
Further can mean "in addition":

· We use elder/eldest before a noun only with reference to ·people in a family:
My elder brother/son, the eldest child, he is the eldest
We use older/oldest for people and things:
He is older than I am. This book is older.
2Comparative adjectives
· We use comparative adjectives to compare two things. When we use a comparative adjective in front of a noun we add than
Humpback whales are larger than killer whales.
· We use object pronouns (me, her, etc.), after than:
Maria is taller than Anna.
Maria is taller than her.
· We can use two comparatives to show that something is changing .
The weather is getting hotter and hotter.
Food is becoming more and more expensive these days.
3Superlative adjectives br
· We use superlative adjectives to compare more than two things. We use the or a possessive 0
adjective (my/your/his, etc.) before the superlative form: 1
Blue whales are the largest whales . What was your best subject at school?
Blue whales are the largest whales . What was your best subject at school? 2
· After superlatives we use in before singular nouns (i.e. the name of a place or group): 3
The blue whale is the largest creature in the world. Ben is the oldest player in the team.
· But we use of before plural nouns:
The blue whale is the largest of the whales. Ben is the oldest of the players . 5
