Home
Home, sweet home. It does not matter what your home is like – a country mansion, a more modest and detached house, a flat in a block of flats. Anyway, it is the place where you once move in and start to furnish and decorate it to your own taste. It becomes your second “ego”.
Your second “ego” is very big and disquieting if you have a house. There is enough space for everything: a hall, a kitchen with an adjacent dining-room, a living-room or a lounge, a couple of bed-rooms and closets (storerooms) a toilet and a bathroom. You can walk around the house thinking what else you can do to renovate it. In the hall you cast a glance at the coatrack and a shoerack. Probably, nothing needs to be changed here.
You come to the kitchen: kitchen furniture, kitchen utensils, a refrigerator (fridge) with a freezer, a dish-drainer, an electric or gas cooker with an oven. Maybe, it needs a cooker hood?
The dining-room is lovely. A big dining table with chairs in the centre, a cupboard with tea sets and dinner sets. There is enough place to keep all cutlery and crockery in. You know pretty well where things go.
The spacious living-room is the heart of the house. It is the place where you can have a chance to see the rest of your family. They come in the evening to sit in front of the coffee table in soft armchairs and on the sofa. You look at the wall units, stuffed with china, crystal and books. Some is left for the stereo system and a TV set. The fireplace and houseplants make the living-room very cosy.
Your bedroom is your private area though most bedrooms are alike: a single or a double bed, a wardrobe, one or two bedside tables and a dressing-table.
You look inside the bathroom: a sink, hot and cold taps and a bath. There is nothing more to see in the toilet.
You are quite satisfied with what you have seen, but still doubts disturb you: “Is there anything to change?” Yes! The walls of the room should be papered, and in the bathroom and toilet – tiled! Instead of linoleum there should be parquet floors. Instead of patterned curtains it is better to put darker plain ones, so that they might not show the dirt. You do it all, but doubt does not leave you. Then you start moving the furniture around in the bedroom. Because the dressing-table blocks out the light. You are ready to give the sigh of relief, but … suddenly find out that the lounge is too crammed up with furniture.
Those who live on one-room or two-room flats may feel pity for those who live in houses. They do not have such problems. At the same time they have a lot of privileges: central heating, running water, a refuse-chute and … nice neighbours who like to play music at midnight. Owners of small flats are happy to have small problems and they love their homes not less than those who live in three-storeyed palaces. Home, sweet home!
III. Answer the questions:
1. Where do you live? (Give your address).
2. What category of owners does your family belong to? Have you a flat or do you live in a private house? How many flats has the house?
3. Say what one can see in a hall, in a kitchen, in a dining room, in a lounge, in a bedroom.
4. Do you have a room of your own? Is there anything special about it?
5. How are the walls of your flat furnished? Are the walls in the bathroom and W.C. tiled? Are the walls of the kitchen whitewashed, tiled or wallpapered? Is the wallpaper washable? Do you like adorned or bare walls? What do you take into consideration when hanging pictures?
6. How is your flat lighted? Is lightening only functional? If you think it can be decorative as well, say how. How many sockets are there in the flat?
7. What labor saving devices have you at home? Discuss the advantages of the labor saving devices you have.
8. Where do you usually have your meals? Do you have meals in the kitchen when you eat informally? Why do most housewives consider eating in the kitchen very convenient?
9. Is your flat crammed up with things? What can be done in the flat to make it more spacious?
10. What do you consider the most boring house chores? What work about the house do you do every day and what is done once in a season?
11. Do you often redecorate the rooms? Do you do your own decoration and repairing yourself or do you prefer to have it done for you?
12. Does the electric light man come to read the meters? How do you pay your rent? How do you pay for water, gas, central heating?
13. Do you make friends with your neighbors? What qualities do you possess as a good neighbor?
14. Can you describe a home of your dream? What do you think it will be like?

SOME CURIOUS FACTS
Finding And Collecting Water
The water in your body helps to regulate your temperature, and keep it working properly. Although you carry water with, you may need to add to your supply by collecting water from the environment. There are tips on how to do this below.
Finding Water
You can use birds and insects to lead you to water. Most grain-eating birds animals and flies are sings that water is near.
Collecting Water
Rainfall
To catch the maximum amount of rainwater, lean a waterproof container under a tree. Extra water will run down the trunk and into the container.
Ice or snow
Thinly spread ice or snow on a sheet of plastic (preferably black, as this absorbs the heat). Arrange the plastic to catch the water as it melts.

Pollution Solutions
Adapted from the “Pollution Solutions ”article by L. Prescott, which appeared in Ranger Rick magazine
Poisons In Food
Farmers often spray chemicals on crops to protect them against pests. These chemicals are called pesticides. Scientists have found that pesticides often end up in our food. Pesticides can cause health problems - especially for kids. But here's the good news: the U.S. government is helping farmers find ways to protect crops without using many pesticides.
Cleaner Cars
Cars are the world's biggest air polluters. But scientists are trying to invent cars that pollute less. Farmers in Illinois are trying a fuel in their tractors made from soybeans. And there are electric minivans being used in at least six U.S. cities.
Trash
In 1993, each person in the United States threw away about four pounds (1.8 kg) of trash daily. Put it all together and you'd fill 45,000 trash trucks every day! About 1/3 of this waste comes from packaging. But here's a bit of good news. Some companies have begun to use less packaging. And lot of U.S. cities have started recycling projects. In these ways we've begun making less trash. Everyone should look at what they throw away and try to throw away less.
So, dear world, you may be covered with dirt and gasping for air. But many people are working hard to fix you, and many kids are rooting for you, too. By the time these kids have grown up, you may do your clean old self again!
ATTENTION!
Dear Students!
Take care of your motherland! Don’t cut the wild flowers. They may all disappear. Plant one oak tree a year. From one oak a forest grows. It is very simple. Put one acorn (желудь) into the land. Never throw or break glass bottles. You damage the land. Take only what you need from the land. Give more to the land than what you take.

At the Doctor’s
Health is the most important thing in every person’s life. A large number of clinics, hospitals, nursing centers and health resorts take care of our health. But no matter how hard we try to avoid diseases, sometimes we can’t do it.
In winter, for example, we often catch cold and have the flu. As a result we have a splitting headache, a cold in the head, cough, and we are running a high temperature. Our whole body aches, so we must consult the doctor.
First the doctor examines the patient’s throat, listens to his heart and lungs, feels his pulse and blood pressure, and takes his temperature. The doctor asks what the trouble is, what diseases we suffered from in the childhood, and sometimes he sends us to some other specialists who will check up our stomach, eyesight, and hearing. The others will make our blood analysis, take our blood pressure and X-ray us. And then the district doctor fills the card and diagnoses the case. Then he prescribes a gargle and cough medicines: pills, powder, drops, and mixture. He also advises us to put a hot water bottle to our feet, to put mustard plasters, and to have hot tea with honey and raspberry jam. That would keep the temperature down. We should take care of ourselves and if we follow the prescribed treatment, we will recover soon without any complications.
In case of a sudden and severe illness or an accident calls are made to the first aid station. There the doctors are on duty all day long. There are many ambulances equipped with everything necessary to give the first aid. The patient is transported to hospital. There he is taken to the reception ward first. After questioning and examination the doctor fills in the patient’s case history. Then a patient is given special clothes and is put to some ward for treatment. The doctors make their daily round there. They examine patients and prescribe different medicines and treatments. And only when a patient is completely cured, he is discharged from the hospital.
In order to avoid diseases we must go in for sports because sports make us strong, healthy and cheerful.

Nauruz
There are a lot of different holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan: official, professional, religious. Among the official ones there are New Year, the Women’s Day, the Day of the Unity of the Peoples of Kazakhstan, the Victory Day, the Day of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Day of Independence. And one of the most popular is Nauruz.
Nauruz is known as a holiday of a great vernal equinox. Orientals have celebrated this holiday since ancient times. The ancient Iranians considered that the whole world was created at the moment of the sunrise. At that moment light was separated from darkness, day from night, good from evil.
Nauruz, the modern Kazakh word for New Year, comes from Persian “nau – new, ruz – year”. Before that New Year was called “Ulys kuni” meaning a tribe or clan day. The tradition of reconciliation between relatives around a festive table, exchange of presents and good wishes was set for this day. The patient resistance to the winter hardships has come to an end, and now with the coming of spring it is time to participate in the life-giving festival. In spring people are in a hurry to revive themselves both physically and spiritually, liquidate their debts, get rid of old unwanted things, repair clothes, houses, water canals and wells, ask for forgiveness for past wrongs, reconcile with neighbours, invite guests and present relatives with gifts.
The main dish of this festival is nauruz-kozhez, a traditional spring soup. Nauruz-kozhez always includes seven ingredients. The ingredients may be different, but smoked meat from the reserves of the past year, milk and cereal are obligatory. There is a popular belief that if one tastes nauruz-kozhez in seven homes, the year will be successful for this person. One should eat it one’s fill so that the next year would be fruit-bearing.
It is impossible to imagine this festival without pleasure measures: sports contests, games and songs. Thousands of people witness sharp verbal competitions of akyns, contests in national sports – Kazakhsha-kures, toguz kumalak, Kuz-Kuu, Baiga. Games are accompanied by songs, playing tunes, setting riddles, improvising. Various dramatized shows and theatrical marches presenting national customs and rituals teach people to respect the national culture and the native land.

A city is a town which has a city-charter (special right in self-government) given to it be the King, or is the seat of a bishop and has a cathedral. Thus, comparatively small places like Wells in Somerset and Chichester in Sussex are cities; and big industrial centres like Oldham in Yorkshire and Wolverhampton in Staffordshire are towns. In the USA all large towns are called cities.
VIII. Fill in the gaps with words and expressions given in English and put them into the right place. Do not forget to use the correct form.
IX. Read (or listen to) information about some of the Museums and points of interest in Britain given below. Now imagine you are a guide employed by a tourist agency and your task now is to make up similar kind of information about your town.
The British Museum. The Museum is officially described as the National Library and Museum of History, Archaeology, Art and Ethnography. In the first place the British Museum is one of the largest libraries in the world with something like 5 or 6 million books; secondly, it is a great scientific institution possessing an enormous collection of manuscripts, ranging in date from the most ancient papyri to modern political papers. The Museum is three things: spectacle, repository, and rooms for learning. Its collections cover a span of some 5,000 years of human history. The Museum began (in 1759) as a private Cabinet of Curiosities, assembled by the physician Hans Sloane. The British Museum is not an art Museum. It displays classical vases, ancient pottery and handicraft, minerals, statuary, Egyptian mummies, tools, weapon and other antiquities. To gain even a summary impression of the Museum and its priceless exhibits, the visitor should be prepared to spend half a day at least in its galleries alone.
The Houses of Parliament.. A huge edifice built in the Gothic style with several pinnacles and towers including Big Ben and Victoria tower, once a royal palace, the Houses of Parliament are now the seat of the British government. In 1834, the building, with the exception of Westminister Hall which dates from 1907, was destroyed by fire. In 1941, the House of Commons was damaged by the German air bombardment. The House of Lords, which contains the Queen's throne, escaped destruction. Visitors are admitted on Saturdays and some bank holidays.
Tower of London.. The most famous fortress in Britain and once the most infamous prison dates from 1078. It was built by the Norman king, William the Conqueror in an angle of the Roman wall, portions of which are still standing and were standing a thousand years before William arrived. On Tower Green is the site of the scaffold where many an English public man and woman were executed. The Crown Jewels, among which are the largest diamonds in the world, are kept in the Wakefield Tower. In the White Tower is a collection of historic armour and weapons.
Westminster Abbey. One can hardly find a more historic spot in Britain than Westminster Abbey. In it have been crowned all English kings and queens, with two exceptions, since William the Conqueror in 1066, and many of them are buried within the Abbey. The monumental Gothic building of the Abbey was rebuilt several times, but its appearance remains practically unchanged since the 13th century. Within the Abbey are the tombs of the most celebrated Englishmen. Among the Abbey's treasures are the Chapel of Henry VII, the Coronation Chair and the helmet of Henry V.
Whitehall. The broad thoroughfare which runs from the Houses of Parliament to Trafalgar Square is known as Whitehall. Here is the Home Office, the Treasury, the War Office, the Admiralty and other government departments. Opposite the Home Office is the Cenotaph, which commemorates the fallen in two World Wars. A little street on the west side of Whitehall is Downing Street, where, at No. 10, resides the Prime Minister of the day. Whitehall witnessed the execution of Charles I in 1649. At the northern end of the street is the equestrian statue' of Charles I by Le Sueur.
X. Suppose you are a guide about London. Make a tour and tell us about the places of interest using the map from the text. Find additional information.
Easter
At Easter time, the British celebrate the idea of new birth by giving each other chocolate Easter eggs which are opened and eaten on Easter Sunday. On Good Friday bakers sell hot cross buns, which are toasted and eaten with butter. Easter Monday is a holiday and many people travel to the seaside for the day or go and watch one of the many sporting events, such as football or horse-racing.
May is here
As summer comes, Britain likes to celebrate the end of the harsh winter months on May, 1 welcoming the beginning of Summer, and optimistically look forward to the bright and productive months. At school children may dance traditional spring dances such as the Maypole, when they weave their brightly coloured scarves into a beautiful pattern around a long pole.
Pancake Day
On Pancake Tuesday, they eat lots of pancakes. These are made of flour, milk and eggs, and fried in a hot pan.
Some towns also hold pancake races on that day. People run through the streets holding a frying pan and throwing the pancake in the air. Of course if they drop the pancake, they lose the race!
