Text Study.

Minerals are the basic naturally occurring inorganic homogeneous units having definite physical and chemical properties which are combined in various ways and under different conditions to form rocks.

Most minerals consist of elements combined as chemical compounds although a few may occur as native elements, – for example, gold, silver, copper, and carbon (diamond and graphite).

Minerals form under many different conditions, but for each mineral there is a specific range of temperature, pressure, and other conditions under which it is stable.

Stated in a different way, minerals are stable only in the environment in which they are formed. For example, olivine forms at depth; it commonly crystallizes from magma under relatively high temperatures and pressures. If olivine is exposed to the temperature, pressure, and humidity of the earth’s surface, it is no longer stable and the crystal structure disintegrates.

If clay minerals which formed at the surface of the earth are deeply burred or subjected to heat and pressure, they change to micas which are stable under new conditions.

A few minerals, such as quartz, are stable under a range of conditions. However, most minerals are not, and since conditions at specific places on the earth’s surface commonly change, minerals change too. Because of crustal movements, minerals which formed at the surface are commonly subjected to the conditions at depth, and minerals which formed at depth are commonly exposed at the surface.

Consequently, change, not stability is the rule.

II

Text Study

Rock – one of the solid materials of which the earth’s crust is mainly composed. It is made up of minerals. The majority of rocks are heterogeneous aggregates of more than one kind of mineral, but some rocks consist largely of a single kind of mineral.

Rock occurs both in the form of layers (strata) and irregular masses of various sizes and shapes. It originates in many ways. According to their origin three major categories of rocks are recognized. They are igneous rocks (Latin “igne” means “fire”), sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. (“Metamorphic” in Greek means “changed form”.)

It is believed that at one time the Earth was molten (liquid or almost liquid). It is believed that some of the molten material cooled to form the solid crust of the Earth. Any material which was formed from liquid rock is called igneous rock.

During the long period of geologic time, igneous rocks were eroded. The forces of erosion carried away particles of eroded rock – some coarse, some fine – and set them down in layers, either on dry land or under water. In time some of these materials were subjected to high pressures. As a result they changed into another type of solid material known as sedimentary rock.

Igneous and sedimentary rocks were often subjected to heat, pressure or movement. As a result their original qualities were changed. Thus, new materials known as metamorphic rocks were formed.

Sedimentary rocks are grouped into free major categories: a) fragmental (or clastic), by far the largest of the groups with many variations in grain size and composition; b) chemically precipitated, subdivided according to their chemical composition; and c) organic, made from the fossil remains of animals and plants.

Mineralogically, the sedimentary rocks are in generalmore simplethanmost of the igneous ones. Fewer minerals, of less complex composition chemically, and as a rule of more stable character, enter as the principal components of the sedimentary rocks. The most common minerals entering into the composition of sedimentary rocks are quartz, feldspar, mica, and iron oxide, both hydrous and anhydrous, together with carbonates sulphates, and, to a less extent, anhydrite, as well asa few less commonly – occurringones.

1. How abundant is oxygen in the Universe?

2. What is “oxidation”?

3. What is “combustion”?

4. What is the difference between combustion and oxidation?

5. What is similar between oxidation and combustion?

Every now and then you read about something that man “couldn’t live without”. Well, one thing that is absolutely necessary to life is oxygen. Without oxygen, a man cannot live more than a few minutes.

Oxygen is an element, the most plentiful element in the universe. It makes up nearly half of the earth’s crust and more than one-fifth of the air.

Oxygen combines very easily with most elements. When this takes place, we call the process “oxidation”. When this oxidation takes place very quickly, we have “combustion”. In almost all oxidations, heat is given off. In combustion, the heat is given off so fast that it has no time to be carried away, the temperature rises extremely high, and a flame appears.

So at one end we have combustion, the fast oxidation that produces fire and at the other end we have slow oxidations that are found everywhere.

Salt is one of the most common minerals. Chemically, salt is a compound of sodium and chlorine. The common salt we use at hone is produced in many ways: from sea water, or the water of salt lakes, from salt springs, and from deposits of rock salt.

Beds of rock salt are found in various parts of the world and are sometimes very thick. Salt springs may be formed by the filtering of water through these beds of rock salt.

Most commercial salt is produced from sea water.

Text Study

All land surfaces are worn away by the processes of weathering and erosion*. Various natural agencies: the sun, wind, rain, frost, running water, moving ice, and sea wear away the land.

Under surface conditions rocks are relatively easily altered. The process of rock alteration is called rock-weathering. The nature of these weathering processes depends largely on the kind of rock and on the specific conditions of its environment. Weathering usually includes both mechanical or physical disintegration and chemical decomposition. Disintegration is a mechanical breakdown with little change in composition. Decomposition is the term for decay of rock which is accompanied by changes in chemical and mineralogical composition.

Thus, rocks decompose or decay by chemical alteration of their component minerals by oxidation, hydration, carbonation, and solution. Chemical weathering, therefore, is a much more complicated process than physical weathering.

Weathering is a static process, while erosion is a dynamic process which includes the loosening and carrying away of rock particles by moving agents operating at the earth’s surface. Indeed, weathering, erosion and deposition are the three main factors in an endless cycle of rock change: weathering prepares the rock for transport by decomposing and disintegrating it; erosional agencies transport the material to a different locality and there deposit it in strata of sand, clay etc. Then the cycle starts anew.

Text Study.

Water is of such profound importance from the standpoint of rock alteration and soil development that it can be compared with the blood of an organism. Chemical weathering is closely associated with water; in very dry and cold regions chemical weathering is slight. Since practically all compounds are attacked by water, it is sometimes referred to as the universal solvent. The presence of carbon dioxide in waters adds materially to its activity.

Temperature relations are also important, since they influence the activity of solutions in the rocks and soil; as a general rule, the higher the temperature, the more rapid the alteration. Particularly important from the standpoint of chemical weathering is the length of time during the year when the temperature is above 0°C, the lower the latitudes the more active the chemical weathering.

Any stream, whether it be on the surface or underground, may also dissolve rock. This is most pronounced where subsurface streams flow through crevices in limestone or other soluble types of rocks. Most of the world’s beautiful caverns are formed in limestone by this dissolving power of running water.

Text Study.

There are two main agents of erosion in deserts: diurnal temperature variations and wind. In deserts, there is often a great difference between day and night temperatures. During the day the sun heats rocks to a great temperature and causes them to expand. At night rocks cool quickly and therefore contract. Constant expansion and contraction causes the outer layers to crack. After some time the eroded rock disintegrates to form particles small enough to be carried or moved by the wind.

When rock is eroded, the wind grades the detritus into three sizes. These sizes are called dust, sand, and gravel. The wind can transport mainly dust and sand, and the distance the material travels depends on the size of the particles and strength of the wind.

Dust is carried in suspension. When sand is blown by the wind, it is too heavy to be carried in suspension. It is carried along in a series of jumps. Gravel, however, is too coarse to be moved by the wind. Sometimes, wind and water combine to break the gravel down to a size small enough to be moved by the wind.

  • глаголы: to raise; to rise; to lower; to sink

Text Study.

The earth’s crust is dynamic and subject to a variety of processes. The forces of nature are always at work. Some of these forces build up the surface of the earth and are called constructive or tectonic forces. They tend to raise the surface forming mountains. They are opposed by the forces of erosion or destructive forces that wear down the surface of the earth. Thus, the crust of the earth rises or sinks almost all the time. All movements of parts of the solid earth with reference to each other are usually referred to as diastrophism.

Earth crust movements may vary from so slow as to be imperceptible to very quick and violent. They may be upward, or downward, or sideward. They may affect only small local areas, or they may involve a large portion of either a continent or an ocean basin. The greater movements of the earth are of two kinds: orogenetic and epeirogenetic. By orogenetic movements mountain masses are raised up. Mountains result from the folding of rocks, when a force horizontal to the surface of the earth causes rock strata to crumple or fold. Folds are the most common structures in mountain chains.

By epeirogenetic movements land masses of continental dimensions are raised or lowered with little folding. These movements are radial, since they take place along the radii of the earth.

Text Study.

Soil is more than a mere mixture of weathered rocks and decayed organic matter: it is a natural body which can be regarded as a product of its environment.

The mineral composition of soils is influenced by a number of factors, chief among which are the nature of the parent material, the processes of soil formation and the age of the soil.

Soil usually contains a greater variety of minerals than do rocks. This is explained by the fact that the parent materials are usually derived from not one but several kinds of rocks.

The influence of soil-forming processes on the mineral composition of soils is important. Soils developed in climatic zones where chemical weathering is intense normally contain a lower proportion of minerals resistant to alteration than do soils developed under conditions of less intense weathering.

The age and maturity of soil also influence its mineral composition. With the increasing age of soil material the proportion of readily altered minerals decrease, and the proportion of minerals resistant to alteration increases.

One of the most important changes in the minerals of the parent material during soil development is their diminution in particle size. This diminution is caused by physical and chemical reactions. In turn the diminution in particle size induces greater chemical activities in minerals.

Text Study.

Ground water is the water contained underground in the pores of soil and rock. When rain falls on the earth some evaporates, some is absorbed by plants, some runs off in streams and the remainder sinks into the earth to become ground water. The amount that sinks into the ground depends on various factors; rain falling on clay either lies on the surface and evaporates or runs off; on steep slopes runoff will exceed absorption.

It is much to the point to inquire how much of the rainfall soaks into the ground, how much evaporates, how much is used by plant life, and how much runs off into streams. It is certain that there is water in the ground in some places and there are good reasons to suppose that water may penetrate rocks to a depth of a dozen miles.

The total amount of water varies greatly from place to place, and even from time to time in the same place.

Water which sinks into the earth moves not merely downward, but sideways and even back to the surface. Thus, there is a sort of circulation of underground water which is kept up fundamentally by gravity, and assisted by such agencies as capillarity and plant roots.

Text Study.

Glaciers are slowly moving aggregates of ice, which originate mostly through the accumulation of snow and its later transformation. Glaciers do not move with a velocity anything like that of water. Ice moves slowly: it is a matter of feet per year rather than feet per second as in streams. As a glacier moves downward, it tends to follow any irregularities along the surface. Commonly, glaciers follow pre-existing stream valleys down mountain slopes. These we call valley glaciers. Ice moves forward at all times, but the position of the edge depends on the rate of advance or retreat is dependent upon temperature and snowfall.

In addition to valley glaciers there are much larger masses of glacial ice called continental glaciers or ice-caps, which cover all elevations of the region. These ice-caps are much thicker at the centre than at the edges.

Glaciers, like rivers and wind, wear away the surface over which they move. Rock debris transported by glacial ice, and deposited either directly or in bodies of glacial melt water, is called glacial drift. Drift is separated into nonstratified drift, or tile, and stratified drift which is sometimes called washed drift. The latter comprises the deposits sorted by the action of melt water.

  5. How does the form of grains of quicksand differ from that of sand?
  6. Why is quicksand unable to support solid objects?
  7. Does quicksand always contain sand?
  8. Is quicksand dangerous for people?

What is quicksand?

What is quicksand? It is a light, loose sand which is mixed with water. It does not look different from sands which might be right next to it. But there is a difference: quicksand will not support heavy objects.

Quicksand usually occurs near the mouths of large rivers and on flat shores where there is a layer of stiff clay under it. Water is collecting the sand because the underlying clay keeps the water from draining away. This water may come from many different places, such as river currents or pools.

The grains of quicksand are different from ordinary grains of sand because they are round instead of being angular or sharp. The water gets between the grains and separates and lifts them, so that they tend to flow over one another. This makes them unable to support solid objects.

Some quicksand is not even made of sand. It can be any kind of loose soil, a mixture of sand and mud, or kind of pebbly mud.

People who step into quicksand do not sink out of sight. Since it contains so much liquid, it will enable them to float. And since quicksand is heavier than water, people can float higher in it than they do in water.

The important thing is to move slowly in quicksand. This is to give it time to flow around the body. Once it does this, it will act like water in which you are swimming.
